Craig Smith and I were honoured to accept the 2017 Environmental Award for Children’s Literature – picture fiction. Thankyou to Museum Victoria for believing in the story and to The Wilderness Society for helping us spread the story further than we ever hoped or imagined. Congratulations to the people of Warrnambool, on the success of this incredible project.
So … in the middle of their act, the band climbed a tree and then the leader singer crowd-surfed back to the stage ..
Things like that happen at the Port Fairy Folk Festival.
My highlight – Aoife Scott – and this song ..
Picture book No 4 – BABY BAND – has just arrived!!
It’s stunning!!! Thanks to New Frontier and Giuseppe Poli for making it happen and Meredith Costain and Karen Tayleur for help along the way. Still can’t quite believe it all – pinch! pinch!
On a normal day, a baby creates mayhem in an apartment block. Diane’s words express her passion for music and its ability to bring people together in joyous celebration. Giuseppe’s illustrations transform an apartment block into a vibrant community.
‘Chooks In Dinner Suits’ has Notables in 2 categories of the CBCA Book of the Year Awards 2017.
I’m thrilled and honoured. This means it is in the longlist from which the shortlist and winners are chosen.
Thank you, Museum Victoria, for believing in me and this story. Thank you, Craig Smith, for making the story live, through your wonderful illustration. Thanks to Swampy Marsh, Warrnambool Coastcare Landcare, Warrnambool Books and Flagstaff Hill for their ongoing support and encouragement.
And congratulations to the wonderful team of children’s writers I am so happy and proud to be part of.
Our friends Margie and Al went cruising. We couldn’t see each other as their ship sailed past – even with binoculars – so I sent them this photo so they’d know I was there.
It’s the thought that counts 🙂
The Warrnambool Maremma/Penguin program is achieving exciting results with the highest penguin count in 5 years. Volunteers counted 180 penguins arriving last Monday, which translates to an estimated 220-250 penguins settling, for the season, on Middle Island.
‘Chooks in Dinner Suits’ is the true story of how the program began. Illustrated by Craig Smith, published by Museum Victoria.

#HarmonyTweet – Picture book for kids by Diane Jackson Hill and Aimee Dickson
Story with music and twitter concepts for early primary, 4-8yrs.
Picture book and ebook format (AMAZON)
With a little help from her family, friends, teachers and community, Aimee has her own successful business, complete with website and sales outlet for her exquisite artwork. She has now added a children’s picture book to her catalogue of greeting cards, calendar, font and masterpieces.
Quite amazing for any young woman, but more so for Aimee who was diagnosed with Autism in early childhood.
A teacher re-taught her how to hold a pen in her final year of secondary school. She started writing for the first time – and doodling. Those quirky doodlings developed into characters, backgrounds – and masterpieces.
#HarmonyTweet is a 32 page picture book for early primary school. Written by Diane Jackson Hill and illustrated by Aimee Dickson
#HarmonyTweet is a fun, rhyming story with an introduction to musical and social media concepts for early childhood
Birds from everywhere can join the Big Bird Band. Twittering and tweeting are in huge demand. Trouble is, Crow’s singing doesn’t quite fit the bill. With a little help from well-meaning tweeters, Crow learns the finer points but still can’t sing a note in tune. Will he ever find a place in the band? “A delightful orchestration of a community, wired by social media and powered by the love of song.”
